UMSS vs JSTS Showdown at Redwood Speedway
Two of the most respected 360 Sprint Car organizations in the Upper Midwest will collide head to head for the first time this Friday night when Redwood Speedway (Redwood Falls, Minnesota) plays host to the first ever UMSS-JSTS showdown. Full UMSS Points will be awarded to all in attendance along with show points being presented to the representatives of the Jackson Speedway Touring Series (JSTS). On top of the show being co-sanctioned it will also be a part of the 2014 Minnesota Mafia Series. Friday night’s event at Redwood will be the second of three during this Mini-Speedweek with the first taking place on Thursday night at Cresco Speedway in Cresco, Iowa. The third and final event of the weekend will take place on Saturday night at the famed Jackson Speedway in Jackson, MN. For fans of the Winged Warriors, this is one you’ll not want to miss.
With five Upper Midwest Sprint Car Series (UMSS) events in the books thus far, Forest Lake, MN veteran Jerry Richert Jr. holds a 98-point lead over 360 Sprint Car rookie Ryan Bowers of Ham Lake. Richert Jr holds two of the five series victories thus far in 2014 with Fargo, North Dakota hotshoe Lee Grosz garnering a pair of wins, as well. Brooke Tatnell of Forest Lake, by way of New South Wales, Australia, owns the other series win.
The cars and stars of the Jackson Speedway Touring Series (JSTS) have held just one event thus far in 2014. On April 26th, Lakefield, MN young gun Skylar Prochaska outlasted Lee Grosz to take the opening night win. The series’ first event was held on opening night at Jackson Speedway.
The Minnesota Mafia has fell victim to rain in two of their first four scheduled shows. On April 19th the Mafia supported their first event of 2014 at Raceway Park in Jefferson, South Dakota. In a star studded affair Sioux Falls, SD driver Gregg Bakker made his way past national standout Jack Dover over Springfield, NE to take the win. Events two and three of the season fell to inclement weather at Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, SD and Rapid Speedway in Rock Rapids, IA. One night ago (Sunday, June 22nd), the Minnesota Mafia sprung back into action supporting the 360 showdown at Casino Speedway in Watertown, SD. In a hotly contested A-main it was Eric Lutz taking the win with Bakker second and Medford, Oregon traveler Roger Crockett rounding out the top three. Redwood Speedway will play host to the third Minnesota Mafia supported event.
Several drivers have expressed interest in partaking in this event including Jerry Richert Jr, Ryan Bowers, Chris Graf, Gregg Bakker and Altoona, Iowa second generation driver Carson McCarl. With the two sanctioning bodies each providing their own set of drivers the car count numbers look to be strong for this special Friday night event. The UMSS, whose rules will be used for this event, run heat races, challenge races along with the night’s A-main. The very fan friendly format gives the fans the opportunity to see the cars on the track vying for position all night long. The amount of heat races and laps in the feature will be determined by the amount of cars in attendance. Each of the three events will pay $1,200 to win with $200 being awarded to the drivers who make the A-main feature events.
If any drivers need the 1 7/8” sleeve used by the UMSS they will be available at Redwood Speedway free of charge (just return after the conclusion of the event). In addition to the UMSS-JSTS Showdown, IMCA Racesaver 305 Sprint Cars and Mini-Mods will be on the docket as well during the all Open-Wheel event.
The first green flag will drop at 7:00 this Friday night with a 6:00 draw cutoff in place for drivers looking to participate. General admission will be $15.00 for adults, $10.00 for teens (13-17), $5.00 for kids (6-12), and five and under are free.

Note* – The Minnesota Mafia pays out a $2,800 to win point fund at seasons end to the driver with the most points who has participated in at least nine mafia events. An additional $2,000 is up for grabs for the driver who passes the most cars during mafia series events in 2014.
