Lundin, Olson, and Jacobus highlight first time winners at Redwood
(August 15th, 2010) – Hanley Falls, MN racer Janae Lundin scored her first career Hobby Stock Feature win Sunday night at Redwood Speedway. Joining Lundin as first time winners included Dan Jacobus in the Sport Compact division, and Jacob Olson in the Bomber divison. Curt Lund stayed hot scoring wins in both the IMCA Sprint Car and IMCA Modified divisions while Brandon Davis recorded his second Redwood Speedway win of the season in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified finale. Last, but certainly not least, Jeff Larson picked up the win in a hotly contested IMCA Stock Car A-main. Sunny skies and a pit full of racecars greeted fans for the annual “Jason Wyffels Memorial” IMCA Modified Special Sunday night at Redwood Speedway. A nice field of 91 racecars packed the pits for Tow Distributing night at the moderately banked 1/2 mile oval.
As always, the Bomber division was first to get the night’s feature events underway with 12 racers making the call. A myriad of yellow flags flew early on before order was restored. The 15-lap affair proved to be a good one with Jacob Olson snagging his first bomber win of the season. The attrition filled event saw Derrick Kronbach come home in the second spot ahead of Nathan Gegner. Brandon Jeunemann of Sanborn and Tony Frietag of Fairfax each collected top five finishes as well for the Bombers. Olson took the win in heat race one while Monte Heiderscheidt collected the win in heat race two.
The Sport Compact A-main featured a great side by side battle between Dean Nething and Dan Jacobus. Nething and Jacobus battled side by side early on before Jacobus finally seized control on the final lap. In the end it was Jacobus taking the win over Nething. Jason Gruendemann ran steady in the third spot while Kris Stoeckman and Kristin Voss rounded out the top five. Jacobus’ win in heat race action completed the clean sweep for the Arlington, MN native.
Janae Lundin took the lead on lap one of the Hobby Stock division’s A-main. Lundin looked strong early on and was scored the leader at the conclusion of the first circuit. The Hobby’s had a myriad of cautions as well with side by side racing taking place all over the high speed 1/2 mile. Nathan Gegner held steady in the second spot while Ryan McMullen and Jesse Timm battled hard for the third spot. Perennial Hobby Stock front runner Rod Manthey rallied from an early mistake to finish in the fifth position just ahead of Brennen Boettger. The story of this one, however, was Lundin scoring his first career Hobby Stock win at Redwood Speedway! Gegner turned in his best run of the season in the second spot followed by Ryan McMullen, Timm, and Manthey. The 15 cars in attendance were divided into three heat races which were won by Dale McMullen, Janae Lundin, and last weeks winner Randy Fischer.
After a couple of early cautions, Troy Berends took the opening lap advantage in the WISSOTA Midwest Modified finale. Berends looked strong out front while the action was hot and heavy behind. Berends led early before a mid-race caution would bunch of the field behind him putting Brandon Davis and Tim Ims on his bumper for the double file restart. When the green flag dropped once again, Davis quickly worked to the inside of Berends. Davis took the lead with Ims quickly applying pressure to the backside of Berends. Tyler Limoges and Brian Haben worked their way through the lap cas in the remaining laps with Haben ultimately taking the third spot behind Ims. Out front it was all Davis taking home his second Redwood Speedway win of the season. Ims turned in another steady run in the second spot ahead of Haben, Limoges, and Berends. Brett Hoium rallied from the back of the pack to finish the event in seventh behind Dan Menk. Heat race wins were collected by Davis, Limoges, and Hoium.
The IMCA Stock Car finale featured an unbelievable side by side battle between Jeff Larson and Ken Tietz. The event began with Jake Bruns taking the early lead with the field stacked up two by two behind. As the race wore on, Larson and Tietz continued to move forward from the middle of the pack. With eight laps up on the board, Tietz and Larson were dead locked in a side by side battle for the lead. Tietz rode the ditch with Larson up on the cushion. The duo distanced themselves from the rest of the field while Jake Bruns continued to hold on to the third spot. Dave Moriarty looked strong the entire event moving into the top five in the ladder stages. On the final trip around, Larson got a run on Tietz as the duo drag raced down the backstretch. Larson went to the bottom to block Tietz’s advances and took the win by a car length at the stripe. Tietz settled for a hard fought second while Jake Bruns turned in a great run in third. Belle Plaine’s Joe Voss finished a great run in fourth ahead of the aforementioned Moriarty. Jorey Prescott picked up his first heat race win of the season in heat race one while Shaun Bruns and Jeff Larson each collected heat race wins as well for the IMCA Stock Cars.
The IMCA Sprint Car A-main was dominated by Redwood Falls, MN driver Curt Lund. Lund moved from his eighth starting position into second on lap one before taking the lead on lap two. From there on out it was all Lund scoring the win. AJ Stevens steadily worked forward in his #7 machine making some very impressive moves taking second with Dan Menk moving into third. Perhaps the most impressive run of the night was turned in by first time visitor David Ekern of Brookings, SD. Ekern wheeled his #23 machine toward the front at rapid pace taking home the fourth spot at the line. Out front it was all Lund as he took home the win. Stevens turned in another solid run coming home second ahead of Menk, Ekern, and Mound, MN driver Terry Anderson. Lund reigned victorious in heat race one while Mike Stien took the win in heat race two.
The final event of the evening belonged to the IMCA Modified division with 12 cars making the call. The field made a beautiful four-wide salute in memory of Jason Wyffels before the field stacked up two by two. Twenty laps was put on the board with the green flag waiving. The action was hot and heavy up front early on with Jeff Maasch finally seizing the lead on lap two. Jim Horejsi moved into second behind Maasch while row four starter Curt Lund quickly moved into third. Lund and Horejsi were locked in a battle for the second spot on lap five while Maasch continued to lead out front. Back in traffic, Josh Rogotzke, Tim Pessek, and Chet Atkinson battled for the fourth spot while Brandon Beckendorf was on the move from his 10th starting position. Lund was able to work by Horejsi for the second spot on lap six and quickly struck up a battle with Maasch for the lead. Maasch picked the cushion with Lund working near the inside tire barrier. The two remained side by side for the lead before Lund blasted by with a power move on the bottom of the track in turn three. Horejsi closed in on the backside of Maasch near the midway point of the race with Beckendorf now in fourth. Beckendorf moved by Maasch into third with eight to go and began the long process of catching Horejsi for the second spot. Beckendorf was able to close in on Horejsi but was unable to make the pass. Rogotzke made a nice pass to move into fourth in the remaining laps while Maasch edged Atkinson for the fifth spot. In the end it was Lund picking up the win with Horejsi in second, Beckendorf in third, Rogtozke in fourth, and Maasch in fifth. Horejsi and Lund picked up heat race wins earlier in the evening for the IMCA Modified division.
Join us once again this Sunday night for some more tremendous side by side action at the high speed 1/2 mile. Races start each and every Sunday night at 5:30. For more information on Redwood Speedway log onto our website at www.redwoodspeedway.com.
