Green scores Bruns Memorial Checkers at Redwood…
Redwood Falls, MN (August 11th, 2013) – Grenada, MN driver Derek Green made his first appearance at Redwood Speedway a memorable one picking up the Dominick Bruns Memorial IMCA Stock Car special victory Sunday night at the moderately banked ½ mile oval located on the Redwood County Fairgrounds. Curt Lund rallied late to score the win in the IMCA Modified division while Matt Looft reigned victorious in the IMCA Sport Mod division. Justin Luinenburg (IMCA Hobby Stocks), Stephanie Forsberg (IMCA Sport Compacts) and Joe Huseby (Redwood Speedway Bombers) all tallied feature wins as well during Redwood Valley Technical Solutions and Redwood Area Chamber night at Redwood Speedway.
The Bomber A-main was the first to roll out onto the speedway with Tony Frietag and Melvin Maddock sharing the front row starting duties. Redwood Falls’ own Joe Huseby, however, jumped to the outside and quickly stole the lead on lap two. From there on out Huseby went unchallenged and scored his first ever Redwood Speedway Bomber feature win. Maddock had a great run coming home second with Frietag third, Pettis fourth and Corey Schumacher fifth. Huseby also picked up the division’s lone heat race win earlier in the evening for the Bombers, who put on a great event.
The IMCA Hobby Stock A-main proved to be a wild one with Reading, MN driver Justin Luinenburg picking up his second wins this week. Roger Jenniges and Matt Olson each led early before surrendering the lead to the ninth starting Luinenburg during the middle stages of the event. Eighth starter Cory Probst did everything in his power to track down Luinenburg but it was not enough to deny Justin, victory. Probst, fellow row four starter Neil Forsberg, 12th starter Josh Telecky and Olson rounded out the top five behind Luinenburg.
Ben Wilhelmi did his best to fend off six-time winner Stephanie Forsberg; and was successful during the first two circuits of the IMCA Sport Compact A-main. Forsberg, however, got a run on the bottom of the speedway exiting turn two which netted her the lead on lap three. Wilhelmi did his best to regain the spot but was unable to deny Forsberg her 11th feature win of the season, overall. Wilhelmi followed in second with Matt Engesser third and Tori Groebner fourth. Forsberg was victorious in heat race action earlier in the evening as well for the IMCA Sport Compacts, which completed the clean sweep.
Brett Trebesch blasted off from his row one starting spot and was scored the leader at the conclusion of the first circuit during action in the IMCA Sport Mod A-main. Trebesch worked the high side of the speedway while the action hot and heavy behind. Fifth starter Larry Revier found the bottom of the speedway to his liking as he moved up into second while Matt Looft and first time visitor Jason Fisher each made charges from deep in the field. The caution flag waved with five laps remaining which bunched up Revier and 12th starting Fisher on the back bumper of Trebesch. When the green dropped over the field, Trebesch lost the handle in turn one which allowed several drivers to sneak by in the process. Revier held the lead while Looft moved by Fisher for the second spot during the exchange. With four laps remaining, Looft maneuvered his way past Revier to take the top spot while Revier was left to do battle with Fisher for second. In the remaining laps it was all Looft as he stretched his lead to six car lengths taking home the victory in the process. Revier edged out Fisher by a bumper for second at the line while 11th starting Tom Brown finished in the fourth position. Jordan Meine was the final member of the top five for the IMCA Sport Mods, who boasted 17 entries.
Next on the docket was the 24-car, 25-lap, $1,000 to win Dominick Bruns Memorial IMCA Stock Car A-main. Rich Gregoire and Jeff McCollum paced the field as the green flag waved. McCollum took the early lead while sixth starter Matt Speckman quickly flexed his muscle moving into the second spot by lap five. The duo battled for the lead out front while 13th starter Dustin Larson began to make his way to the front. McCollum continued to lead until lap eighth when he jumped the cushion in turn four which handed the lead over to Speckman. After a series of yellows it was Speckman holding the lead over Derek Green and Dustin Larson. Order was the restored and the top three proceeded to embark on a three wide battle for the lead that the fans will not soon forget. Larson stole the lead from Speckman with 10 to go before Speckman fought back and pulled even several times. While Larson and Speckman worked the bottom side of the speedway, Green and Ken Tietz did their best to keep the top side cleaned off. On the final trip around Green made a power move to the inside of Larson as the front duo charged into turn three. Larson washed up into the slick with Green planting his #32 tight to the bottom. The duo drag raced off of turn four with Green taking the win in dramatic fashion. Larson, Speckman, Tietz and McCollum each scored top five finishes, as well. Tietz was crowned the overall series champion during a great ceremony which took place after the conclusion of the race.
The final event of the night belonged to the IMCA Modifieds with Jeff Maasch and Trent Loverude manning the front row starting duties. Loverude got the jump and was scored the leader at the conclusion of the first circuit. Dalton Magers moved to the top side of the speedway up into second while fifth starter Tyler Limoges made his way into third. Loverude looked strong early on before Limoges began to real him little by little. The first and only yellow flag of the event waved with five laps remaining which bunched up the field behind Loverude. On the restart, Curt Lund made a bonsai move for the top side of the speedway in turn one. The black #87 stuck as he moved from fifth to 1st in one set of turns taking the lead down the backstretch. Brandon Beckendorf followed Lund from deep in the field and waged a great two car battle for second with Limoges. In the end it was Lund stretching his advantage taking his fourth Redwood Speedway win of the season. Beckendorf edged out Limoges at the line by mere inches for second with Loverude and Magers rounding out the top five. Lund took the win in heat race one while Magers tallied the victory in heat race two.
