Forsberg family dominant at Redwood Speedway
Redwood Falls, MN (June 30th, 2012) – For Neil Forsberg of Slayton (MN) the job of helping his daughter Stephanie become one of the most successful Sport Compact drivers in all of IMCA has been a rewarding one. On Sunday night, however, he was able to join his daughter in victory lane, this time behind the wheel of his own IMCA Hobby Stock. In IMCA Modified competition it was Redwood Falls’ own Curt Lund reigning victorious while Sibley, Iowa traveler Chris Palsrok tallied his first win of the season in the IMCA Stock Car finale. Matt Looft picked up where he left off one year ago marching to a very impressive win in the IMCA Sport Modified A-main with Monte Heiderscheidt picking up his second win in as many weeks in the Redwood Speedway Bomber division. Ellendale, MN driver Nathan Kilwine took home the $150 payday in the Mini Mod finale while the aforementioned Forsberg scored the win in the IMCA Sport Compact main event. Drivers, fans and pit crew members from all over the area convened once again Sunday night for KLGR night at Redwood Speedway.
The Mini Mods got the night’s feature festivities underway with Kilwine taking the lead from the drop of the green. Kilwine would set a torrid pace early on with Devon McMartin moving from his fourth starting spot up into second. McMartin did everything in his power to track down Kilwine but it was not enough as Nathan took the win. McMartin, Myron Pool, Scott Johnson and Dave Finstead rounded out the top five finishing order for the Mini Mods, who made their first appearance of the season at the Speedway. Kilwine also scored the heat race win earlier in the evening for the Mini Mods.
Next on the docket was the Redwood Speedway Bomber A-main with Melvin Maddock and Monte Heiderscheidt sharing the front row starting duties. Starter Layne Roberts dropped the green over the field with Heiderscheidt taking the early advantage. Maddock and Billmeier battled momentarily for the second spot with Frank taking the position three laps into the event. Out front it was all Heiderscheidt picking up his second win of the year. Billmeier, Maddock, Joe Huseby and Jake Groff were all members of the top five, as well.
With the non-sanctioned divisions out of the way the IMCA Hobby Stocks rolled out onto the speedway for their 15-lap A-main event. Tory Harazin took the early lead while several drivers had trouble keeping their machines hooked to the track. On lap six, Harazin jumped the cushion in turn two which allowed fifth starting Forsberg the opportunity to take the lead. The best battle on the speedway was for the second spot between fellow row four starter Josh Telecky and Justin Luinenburg. In the end it would be Telecky holding Luinenburg off for the runner up spot. In the end it was all Forsberg as he took home the mighty impressive win. Telecky, Luinenburg, Harazin and Nathan Gegner rounded out the top five.
Although Ben Wilhelmi was scored the leader at the conclusion of the first lap it was Stephanie Forsberg leading the remaining circuits scoring her third Redwood Speedway checkers of the season. Wilhelmi, Jon Joehnck, and Tori Groebner rounded out the running order for the IMCA Sport Compact division.
Twenty of the toughest IMCA Sport Mods in the country rolled out onto the speedway next for their 15-lap feature event with Larry Revier and Dan Milbrandt on the front row. Milbrandt jumped the top side and took the lead early on while fifth starters Aaron Krohn moved by Revier for the second spot. A few cautions slowed action during the midway point of the race with Krohn able to dispose of Milbrandt for the lead. Back in traffic 11th starting Matt Looft sliced and diced his way through traffic finding himself on the rear bumper of Krohn when the final yellow of the event waved with four laps remaining. Krohn was able to fend off Looft’s advances in turns one and two but Matt made a bottom side power move stick in turn four which netted him the lead. Looft stretched the advantage during the final three circuits scoring his first Redwood Speedway win of the season. Krohn, Revier, 10th starting Jordan Meine and Milbrandt all took home top five finishes. Krohn, Adam Ecker and Meine all scored heat race wins earlier in the program for the IMCA Sport Mods who put on a tremendous event.
Despite the fact the Sport Mods put on a great event the IMCA Stock Cars were up to the task with Rich Gregoire and Jesse Timm sharing the front row starting duties. Gregoire jumped out the early advantage before losing traction and spinning his machine around in turn three. The field realigned two by two with Palsrok taking the early advantage. Back in traffic, two time winner Dan Mackenthun made his way to the front via the bottom groove while most of the drivers worked the cushion. Mackenthun sat in the third spot behind Palsrok and Jake Bruns with six laps remaining when he was finally able to sneak by Bruns with a power move on the cushion in turn three. Mackenthun quickly moved up to do battle with Palsrok finding himself on the rear bumper of the #X machine with two laps remaining. As the two front runners took the white, Mackenthun drove his #92 into turn one on the cushion. He then ran it down the hill pulling even with Palsrok who had continued to work the cushion. Two duo drag raced down the backstretch with Mackenthun on the bottom and Palsrok on the top. Palsrok, however, was able to keep his momentum up on the high side on his way to victory. Mackenthun settled for a hard fought second ahead of Jake Bruns, Jim Richert and Gregoire. Gregoire was victorious in the division’s lone heat race.
The IMCA Modified A-main was dominated by Redwood Falls’ own, Curt Lund. Lund used a turn three power move to slide by Dan Menk to take the lead on lap one, a lead in which he would never relinquish. Behind Lund the best battle on the speedway was for the second spot between Brandon Beckendorf and Josh Rogotzke. The duo ran side by side several times with Rogotzke until taking home the runner up position. Beckendorf, ninth starting Jim Horejsi and Dalton Magers all took home top five finishes for the IMCA ground pounders, who posted a dozen entries. Lund and Menk each tallied heat race wins earlier in the program for the Modifieds, who put on a great event.
